What's Really Keeping You Awake at Night (It's Not Insomnia)
Jun 10, 2025
You don't need another morning routine. You need a body that feels safe enough to actually rest.
If you're exhausted and wired at once, lying awake at one in the morning despite the magnesium, the screens off, every sleep hygiene box checked, you are not alone. And you are not broken.
Most sleep advice misses the point because it focuses on routines instead of what's actually happening underneath them. You don't have a sleep disorder. You have a body that's never fully off duty.
What gets called insomnia is often something closer to bedtime procrastination, a system in overflow that finally exhales once the world goes quiet. There's research on this pattern, sometimes called revenge bedtime procrastination, where people delay sleep to reclaim some sense of freedom after a day with none. Instead of rest, we reach for control. Instead of sleep, we reach for stimulation. Because we haven't yet felt safe enough to actually slow down.
For high performing women, especially those navigating expat life, perfectionism, or high stakes leadership, this isn't failure. It's a pattern your body built for good reason.
If you're waking consistently between one and three in the morning, that's not random. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this window is tied to the liver, the organ associated not just with physical processing but with unmetabolized anger and frustration. Your body may simply be trying to clear a backlog it hasn't had daytime space for.
This can be triggered by rich food late at night, unprocessed emotional charge from the day, chronic overextension, or a lack of physical grounding. What's actually happening is old activation finally starting to thaw. That's not insomnia. That's your body attempting repair.
Our culture glorifies the early wake up and quietly shames rest. What if the more radical act is going to bed early, not because you earned it, but because you're inherently worthy of it. Between ten at night and two in the morning is when your body does its deepest repair work, hormonally, physically, emotionally.
A few things I actually guide women through, not as hacks, but as real practice: wind down by nine, let the evening exhale you. Shift dinner earlier so digestion completes before sleep. Lie flat, one hand on your chest, one on your belly, and breathe, telling your body it's safe to soften now. If you wake at two, skip the phone, sip warm water, and remind yourself there's nothing to fix right now. Replace scrolling with a small ritual, tea, a warm cloth on your face, a few lines in a journal, anything that reconnects you to your body instead of pulling you further from it.
