The Other F Word: Our Obsession with Fixing Ourselves

You are not addicted to fixing because you're broken. You learned to fix because somewhere, someone made you feel like being you wasn't enough.

There's an F word we don't talk about enough. Not that one. This one: fixing.

It hides in your morning routine. It dresses itself up as discipline. It lives in your planner, your skincare shelf, your quiet commitment to being better. What if fixing was never a sign of growth, but a sign of survival.

Fixing is a strategy your body built. It shows up when being in your own skin feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar. We fix to feel in control. To distract. To override discomfort before it becomes something we have to feel.

It looks like buying a new supplement after a hard week. Booking a facial the moment you burn out. Starting a ten step routine out of nowhere. Reading another book instead of grieving. Building the perfect plan so you never have to sit in uncertainty.

None of that makes you wrong. It makes you human. But when fixing becomes the default, it creates a loop of constant vigilance, even when your calendar is full of things labeled wellness.

Here's what's actually happening underneath. Chronic fixing is chronic survival. When your body is stuck in override, bracing against a threat that isn't actually there anymore, it cannot prioritize glow, clarity, or presence. It's too busy protecting you to let you thrive.

Glowing was never a reward for productivity. It's a reflection of safety.

So what's the alternative. Not apathy. Feeling.

Instead of a full reset, try a five minute stretch or a hand on your heart. Instead of solving in your journal, try sensing, what's the texture, the weight, the color of what's actually here. Instead of biohacking your breath, just pause. Inhale like you're smelling flowers, exhale like you're fogging a mirror. Instead of another productive walk, take one with no podcast, no multitasking, just you and your body's own rhythm. Instead of performing your way through a stuck moment, let it sink into your body. Notice where it sits. Breathe into that place and trust what comes up.

This was never about fixing your stress. It's about no longer fixing yourself into a corner.

Your glow, your clarity, your power, they were never waiting at the end of a checklist. They're waiting for you to come home to your body.
